OK so here’s how to disable Office from opening read-only documents in Reading View:
1) Open Word. Then open a new document.
2) Click File – Options
3) Under the General tab, there will be an option that says “Open e-mail attachments and other uneditable files in reading view”. Simply uncheck this, and its disabled!
Does not work when opening a word.doc file out of Dropbox or Google Drive via Word 2013. The document does not have “Read Only” checked under properties. Any other suggestions? – Kent
I would guess it’s probably due to the nature of the file being opened from a web location vs local.
Looks like a recent update might have triggered this. Check out this post and see if their suggestions help. I don’t have any online accounts setup for Word. I work local and only sync up to the clown, eh cloud for backups. 🙂

And I have no idea why my comments have shrunk. Hmm back to the theme code 😕
There’s also an option to disable documents being opened in reading mode from the internet.
Go under Options -> Trust Center Settings -> Protected view, and uncheck all of those.
I hope this works!
I’m actually having trouble with a client who’s Word 2013 opens large documents in reading mode, but only if he opens them by opening the folder within Word (which happens to be the only way he opens them). It doesn’t do it if he uses a recent document button or from Windows explorer. And I’ve unchecked both the option Josh suggested AND the one I suggested. I’m about to just reformat the drive using an image we have.
